Why Essaouira

Where Fes is landlocked, layered and spiritual, Essaouira (Mogador on the old Portuguese charts) is open, salty and forgiving. It sits on the far Atlantic side of the country, so most of our guests reach it on the Marrakech leg of an imperial journey rather than directly from Fes — fly or take the train to Marrakech, then drive three hours west to the coast. The reward is a small whitewashed medina you can cross in fifteen minutes, 18th-century sea walls that have stood in for Astapor on screen, and a working harbour where the wind never quite drops.

What to see

Highlights of Essaouira.

01

The Skala sea bastion

A row of bronze cannon along the Portuguese-built sea wall, spray on one side and the medina on the other — the rampart screen audiences know as Astapor.

02

Harbour catch on the grill

Choose your fish straight off the blue boats at the port and watch it cooked over coals at the quayside stalls — the simplest, freshest meal on the Atlantic.

03

Argan along the coast road

Stop at a women's cooperative on the approach from Marrakech to see the kernels cracked and the oil hand-pressed, a craft as patient as anything in the Fes tanneries.

04

Sidi Kaouki & the southern beaches

Wide empty sand and steady wind south of town, with the Oualidia oyster lagoon a longer run up the coast.

FAQ

Essaouiracommon questions.

Can I reach Essaouira from Fes?+

Not in a single short hop — Essaouira is on the opposite, Atlantic side of the country. We slot it into the Marrakech portion of an imperial itinerary, where it is a comfortable three-hour drive west. An overnight beats a rushed day trip; two nights is the sweet spot.

Can you swim at Essaouira?+

You can, though the trade winds blow most days and the Atlantic stays cool through the year. For calmer, warmer water drop south to Sidi Kaouki or carry on toward Agadir.
