Frequently asked
Spring (roughly March–May) and autumn (September–November) are the most pleasant, with mild temperatures for walking the medina's covered lanes. Summer can be very hot inland, and winter is cooler with occasional rain. The old city is busy year-round, so visiting outside the peak heat makes long days on foot more comfortable.
Most visitors spend a full day or two exploring Fes el-Bali, the historic walled medina. One day covers landmark sights such as the tanneries, the Al-Quaraouiyine area, the Bou Inania and Attarine medersas and the main souks, while a second day allows a slower pace, artisan workshops and time in Fes el-Jdid or the surrounding gardens.
A licensed local guide is strongly recommended in Fes. The medina is one of the world's largest car-free urban areas, with thousands of intersecting lanes that are genuinely easy to get lost in, and a guide adds historical context to the monuments, mosques and craft workshops. Our tours are arranged with knowledgeable local guides who know the medina well.
Our Fes tours are private by default, arranged for you and your own party so the pace and stops are tailored to you. Inside Fes el-Bali everything is explored on foot, since the narrow lanes and steps are not accessible to cars; goods still move by handcart and mule. Comfortable, sturdy footwear is important for the uneven, sometimes slippery cobbles.
Modest, comfortable clothing and good walking shoes suit both the religious sites and the long walking distances; lightweight layers help in the heat. Fes is also a strong base for day trips, including the Roman ruins of Volubilis and the hilltown of Moulay Idriss, the imperial city of Meknes, and the cedar forests and Berber towns of the Middle Atlas such as Ifrane and Azrou.
