Why Agadir

Be honest with yourself about the map: Agadir is nowhere near Fes. It sits on the far southern Atlantic coast in the Souss, a long way down the country, and travellers reach it on the Marrakech or southern leg of a trip rather than as any kind of day out from Fes. What it offers is pure downtime — a sweeping crescent of golden sand, a palm-lined promenade and over 300 days of sunshine a year. Rebuilt after the 1960 earthquake, it is modern and resort-minded rather than medieval: the hilltop kasbah above the bay, the laid-back surf village of Taghazout just north, and the palm-shaded pools of Paradise Valley in the Anti-Atlas behind. If your heart is set on Fes and the imperial north, treat Agadir as a separate southern add-on, not a neighbour.

What to see

Highlights of Agadir.

01

Agadir beach & promenade

A 10 km arc of golden sand with calm, swimmable water, beach clubs and one of the longest, easiest seafront walks in Morocco.

02

Taghazout & the surf coast

A relaxed surf village 20 minutes north of the bay — reliable point breaks, yoga decks, argan-oil cooperatives and cafes for the sunset.

03

Paradise Valley

Palm-fringed natural pools and small waterfalls cut into the Anti-Atlas gorges, about an hour inland — the best half-day escape from the coast.

04

Kasbah Oufella

The hilltop ruins of Agadir's old fortress, now reached by cable car, with a wide panorama over the bay, the port and the Souss plain.

FAQ

Agadircommon questions.

Can I visit Agadir from Fes?+

Not realistically as a trip from Fes — it is on the far southern coast, a very long way south, and is reached on the Marrakech or southern leg instead. If you want beach, sun and surf, Agadir is the country's best resort base, with year-round sunshine and easy access to Taghazout and Paradise Valley; just plan it as its own southern segment rather than an extension of the imperial north.

Is Agadir or Essaouira better?+

Agadir is sunnier, warmer and more resort-oriented with a bigger beach; Essaouira, up the coast, is windier but far more atmospheric, with a historic medina and ramparts. Both sit on the southern Atlantic, so travellers on the Marrakech or southern leg often string the two together.
