Where to stay in Fes, area by area

For a first visit, stay in a riad inside Fes el-Bali or on its Batha edge: the madrasas, souks and tanneries are a walk from your door, and a porter meets you at the gate. Choose Fes el-Jdid for calm, or the Ville Nouvelle for lifts, parking and a car at the door.

Your area decides how your days in Fes go, more than the room does.Plan this with us

Choose the area before you choose the riad

Fes el-Bali is the old walled city, a car-free web of lanes where most of the great riads hide behind plain doors. Wake up there and the call to prayer, the bakery smoke and the first donkeys are your alarm clock. The price of that atmosphere is the walk: no car reaches your door, so bags go in on a porter's handcart.

Batha, on the western edge of the old city near Bab Boujloud, gives you most of that magic with a taxi at the end of the lane. Fes el-Jdid, the Merinid royal town around the palace and the Mellah, is quieter and easier to drive through. The Ville Nouvelle, the French-era new town, trades atmosphere for broad avenues, lifts, parking and the train station.

How arrival works in the medina

Before you fly

We match the area to you

Mobility, luggage, children, late arrivals and how much quiet you want all point to an area before a property.

Arrival

Driver to the nearest gate

Fes airport is 15 km from the city, 20–30 minutes by car. For Fes el-Bali the car stops at a gate such as Bab Boujloud, Bab Rcif or Bab Guissa.

The last stretch

A porter walks you in

Your bags go on a handcart and someone from the riad leads the way. Save the riad's number and a photo of its door.

Day two

You know your way home

After a day or two most guests learn their route by its landmarks: a fountain, a bakery, a green-tiled minaret.

Departure

Bags out first

We time the porter and the car so you are not carrying a suitcase up a lane at dawn.

Road distances and times are typical ranges for a private car, without stops.

Who arranges it

A Fes-based trip planner from Serenity Morocco Tours puts the whole thing together: the stay, the transfers, the guide, the tables and the timing. We tell you why we suggest each place, and if a property isn't right for your dates or your needs we say so and offer another. You get one written proposal and one contact for the whole trip.

Before you ask us

The questions people ask us most before they plan a trip.

Should I stay inside the Fes medina or in the Ville Nouvelle?
Stay inside Fes el-Bali, in a restored riad, if you want to wake up in the old city and walk out into the lanes. The trade-off is that no car reaches your door, so a porter brings your bags from the gate. Choose the Ville Nouvelle if you want lifts, parking and a taxi at the door, or if you arrive late and leave early.
What is the best area to stay in Fes for a first visit?
Fes el-Bali or its Batha edge. You are a walk from the Bou Inania madrasa, the souks and the tanneries, and Batha keeps a taxi within reach. Fes el-Jdid suits a second visit or anyone who wants calm; the Ville Nouvelle suits short, practical stays.
How do you get your luggage to a riad in Fes?
On foot. Cars cannot enter the heart of Fes el-Bali, so porters carry or wheel bags on handcarts from the nearest gate. Pack a bag you can lift over steps, and tip the porter. When we plan your stay, we book the porter for arrival and departure.
Is it easy to get lost staying in the Fes medina?
On the first evening, a little. Most riads send someone to meet you at the gate and walk you in, and after a day or two you learn your route home by its landmarks. We add a guide for your first walk so you get your bearings.
Are there riads in Fes for guests with limited mobility?
A few. Some riads have a lift or ground-floor rooms, and staying in Batha, Fes el-Jdid or the Ville Nouvelle keeps the walk from the car short or removes it. Tell us what you need and we only suggest places that fit.

Tell us your dates. We'll plan it with you.

  1. Tell us what drew you in. Your dates, who is travelling and what you want to see.
  2. A person reads it. We write a day-by-day plan for your group, private or small-group.
  3. You change anything. Then we confirm the guides, drivers and riads.
