Why Meknes
Of everywhere you can reach from Fes, Meknes is the closest and the easiest: under an hour by car or train, yet a world quieter than the medina you left that morning. It is the most underrated of Morocco's four imperial cities, built by the 17th-century sultan Moulay Ismail to rival Versailles, with monumental gates, the colossal Heri es-Souani granaries and stables, and a relaxed, lived-in medina that sees a fraction of the Fes crowds. It is also the springboard for two of the region's great sights — the Roman ruins of Volubilis and the holy hilltop town of Moulay Idriss Zerhoun, both around 30 minutes on. Most of our guests fold all three into a single, unhurried day trip out of Fes.
What to see
Often called the most beautiful monumental gate in Morocco — a vast arch of green-and-white zellige and carved stone facing the old mechouar.
Moulay Ismail's cavernous vaulted granaries and stables, set beside the huge Agdal reservoir dug to keep the imperial city watered through any siege.
A UNESCO archaeological site of standing arches, in-situ floor mosaics and olive groves — the best-preserved Roman ruins in Morocco, about 30 minutes beyond Meknes and an easy reach from Fes.
A sacred whitewashed town spilling across two green hills above Volubilis, built around the tomb of Idris I — founder of Morocco's first dynasty and a figure closely tied to the founding of Fes.

Absolutely — it is the single easiest excursion from Fes, under an hour away, and the quietest of the imperial cities: monumental gates and granaries with almost none of the Fes medina hustle. Paired with Volubilis and Moulay Idriss it makes one of the best days in northern Morocco.
Volubilis is about 30 km (30–40 minutes) beyond Meknes, and roughly an hour and a quarter from Fes. Because Meknes sits under an hour from Fes, most travellers fold Meknes, Volubilis and Moulay Idriss into one private day trip out of Fes.
