Why Agafay Desert
The Agafay is Marrakech's desert in miniature: a rolling, rock-strewn moonscape just 40 minutes from the city, with the snow-capped High Atlas as a backdrop. It sits firmly on the Marrakech side of the country, so Fes-based travellers meet it on the southern leg of an imperial journey rather than from the north. It is the honest compromise when there is no time to reach Erg Chebbi — the great orange dune sea that Fes opens onto by the scenic two-day road through Ifrane, Midelt and the Ziz. The Agafay is not sand dunes but a stone desert of khaki hills; yet at sunset, with a lantern-lit camp, a camel silhouette and the Atlas turning pink, it delivers much of the romance for a fraction of the travel. If your trip is anchored in Fes and you have the days, the true Sahara is the better reward; if you don't, the Agafay is the graceful stand-in on the Marrakech leg.

It depends on time. If your trip is based in Fes and you have two or three days, the scenic northern road through Ifrane, Midelt and the Ziz to the great dunes of Erg Chebbi is the far richer experience. If you only have the Marrakech leg and no days to spare, the Agafay delivers a desert sunset, camps and camel rides 40 minutes from the city — rocky hills rather than sand dunes, but genuinely atmospheric.
No — Agafay is a stone desert of rolling rocky hills, not Saharan sand dunes. It's beautiful at sunset and very convenient on the Marrakech leg, but for classic dunes you need Erg Chebbi (Merzouga), best reached on the northern road from Fes, or Erg Chigaga in the deep south.
