Between two flights, a few hours in the lanes of Fes el-Bali

A Fes layover tour works with about 7 hours between landing and an international departure, because Fes-Saiss sits close to the old city. A licensed guide walks you from Bab Boujloud past two Marinid madrasas to the Chouara tannery terrace and lunch. We plan backwards from your flight, so you reach the terminal at least 3 hours before it.

  • Minimum layover: About 7 hours
  • Airport to medina: 20 to 30 min
  • Time in the medina: About 2 to 4 hours

An 8-hour layover, timed backwards

Fes is one of the few Moroccan cities where a layover tour genuinely works, because the airport is close to the old city. The medina is vast, so the aim is not to see everything: it is a focused walk through the most rewarding lanes with a licensed guide who knows the short cuts.

A riad or simple restaurant near the route; we pick it for speed as well as flavour.

Back to the car

Short drive to Fes-Saiss, arriving around 5:00 with at least 3 hours before an international departure.

Road distances and times are typical ranges for a private car, without stops.

How we run it

We plan the day backwards from your departure. Fix the time you must be back at the terminal, subtract the drive and a margin, and what remains is your medina time.

Private

Private is the natural fit for a layover: the whole day is built around your two flight times, and the guide and driver work to your clock alone. If anything runs late, there is nobody else's schedule to balance.

Small-group

Small-group layover tours only work when several travellers share very similar arrival and departure times, which is uncommon. If you are travelling with friends or family on the same flights, we quote one tour for the whole party.

What we arrange

  • Driver waiting in arrivals, working from your real landing time
  • A route planned backwards from your departure time, not forwards from landing
  • Hand luggage kept in the locked vehicle under the driver's watch while you explore
  • A licensed local guide for the city walk (official guides carry a badge)
  • Bottled water, and a phone or WhatsApp contact for the driver throughout
  • Return to the terminal with the buffer agreed before you land
  • Optional stop at the Borj Nord viewpoint over the medina

Best season

Spring and autumn are the most comfortable for walking. Summer afternoons in Fes are hot, so we start indoors in the madrasas and keep the tannery for when the light is kind. Fridays at midday and some holidays change which shops are open.

The honest details

Leaving the airport means entering Morocco

To go into town you pass passport control and are formally admitted to Morocco, then go through departure formalities again later. Check whether your nationality needs a visa before you book; see our visa and entry guide.

Luggage

If your checked bags are tagged through to your final destination, you only carry hand luggage, which can stay in the locked vehicle. If you are on separate tickets, you may need to collect bags and check in again: tell us, because it changes the timing. We do not plan around an airport left-luggage desk.

The buffer back to the airport

We plan to have you back at the terminal at least 3 hours before an international departure and 2 hours before a domestic one, unless your airline asks for more. Moroccan airports screen passengers and bags at the terminal entrance as well as after check-in, so queues can build at both points.

What fits in a short gap

With 7 hours you will see a handful of monuments and lanes, not the whole medina. If you want the full picture, the full-day guided tour or an overnight layover is a better fit.

Questions, answered

What people ask us most before they book this.

How long does my layover need to be for a Fes tour?
We suggest at least 7 hours between landing and an international departure, or about 6 hours for a domestic one. Below that, the time left after formalities, the drive and the return buffer is too short to be worth the stress, and we will tell you so rather than sell you a rushed day.
Do I need a visa to leave the airport on a layover?
Leaving the airport means entering Morocco, so the normal entry rules for your passport apply. Many nationalities can enter without a visa for short stays, but not all. Check the official requirements for your nationality before you book; our visa and entry guide explains how.
What happens to my luggage during the tour?
Hand luggage stays in the locked vehicle with the driver. If your checked bags are tagged through to your final destination they stay airside. If you are on separate tickets and must collect bags, tell us: we adjust the timing for re-checking them.
What if my inbound flight is delayed?
We watch the flight and shorten the tour, never the buffer. The return time to the terminal is fixed from your departure, so a late landing means fewer stops, not a missed flight.
How much does a layover tour cost?
Each layover tour is quoted for your flight times, party size and what you want to see. Send both flight numbers through the quote form and we reply with a timed plan and one written figure.
Can we see the tanneries on a Fes layover?
Yes, from one of the leather shop terraces overlooking the Chouara tannery. It fits into most layover routes; the guide times it so you are not climbing stairs in the hottest part of the day.

Tell us your dates. We'll plan it with you.

  1. Tell us what drew you in. Your dates, who is travelling and what you want to see.
  2. A person reads it. We write a day-by-day plan for your group, private or small-group.
  3. You change anything. Then we confirm the guides, drivers and riads.
