A layover in Casablanca: the mosque on the ocean, lunch by the sea

A Casablanca layover tour needs about 8 hours between landing and an international departure, because the city is a longer drive from Mohammed V than Fes or Marrakech are from their airports. Your driver and licensed guide take you to the Hassan II Mosque, along the Ain Diab corniche for lunch and, if time allows, into the Habous quarter.

  • Airport to city: 30 to 45 min
  • Time in the city: About 2 to 4 hours

A 9-hour layover, timed backwards

Casablanca Mohammed V is Morocco's busiest hub, and many travellers pass through it on the way to or from Fes, Marrakech, West Africa or the Americas. The city is about 30 km from the airport, so the drive is longer than at Fes or Marrakech, and traffic decides a lot.

We leave the city early because traffic is unpredictable, and reach the terminal at least 3 hours before departure.

Road distances and times are typical ranges for a private car, without stops.

How we run it

The anchor is the Hassan II Mosque, built on the shore and one of the few working mosques in Morocco that non-Muslims can visit inside, on guided tours at set times. Around it we fit the Atlantic corniche and, if time allows, the Habous quarter and the art deco centre.

Private

Private is the natural fit for a layover: the whole day is built around your two flight times, and the guide and driver work to your clock alone. If anything runs late, there is nobody else's schedule to balance.

Small-group

Small-group layover tours only work when several travellers share very similar arrival and departure times, which is uncommon. If you are travelling with friends or family on the same flights, we quote one tour for the whole party.

What we arrange

  • Driver waiting in arrivals, working from your real landing time
  • A route planned backwards from your departure time, not forwards from landing
  • Hand luggage kept in the locked vehicle under the driver's watch while you explore
  • A licensed local guide for the city walk (official guides carry a badge)
  • Bottled water, and a phone or WhatsApp contact for the driver throughout
  • Return to the terminal with the buffer agreed before you land
  • We check that day's mosque tour times before you land

Best season

Year-round; Casablanca's Atlantic climate is mild. Hassan II Mosque tour times change around Friday prayers, religious holidays and Ramadan, so we confirm the day's schedule in advance.

The honest details

Leaving the airport means entering Morocco

To go into town you pass passport control and are formally admitted to Morocco, then go through departure formalities again later. Check whether your nationality needs a visa before you book; see our visa and entry guide.

Luggage

If your checked bags are tagged through to your final destination, you only carry hand luggage, which can stay in the locked vehicle. If you are on separate tickets, you may need to collect bags and check in again: tell us, because it changes the timing. We do not plan around an airport left-luggage desk.

The buffer back to the airport

We plan to have you back at the terminal at least 3 hours before an international departure and 2 hours before a domestic one, unless your airline asks for more. Moroccan airports screen passengers and bags at the terminal entrance as well as after check-in, so queues can build at both points.

Mosque visits run at set times

Non-Muslims can enter the Hassan II Mosque only on guided tours, with tickets bought at the mosque, and never during prayers. Fridays and religious holidays have reduced schedules. Modest dress covering shoulders and knees is required.

Traffic is the wildcard

The airport road and central Casablanca can jam at rush hour. We build extra margin into the return, more than at Fes or Marrakech.

Questions, answered

What people ask us most before they book this.

How long does my layover need to be for a Casablanca tour?
We suggest at least 8 hours between landing and an international departure, because the city is about 30 km away and traffic can be heavy. Below that, the time left after formalities, the drive and the return buffer is too short to be worth the stress, and we will tell you so rather than sell you a rushed day.
Do I need a visa to leave the airport on a layover?
Leaving the airport means entering Morocco, so the normal entry rules for your passport apply. Many nationalities can enter without a visa for short stays, but not all. Check the official requirements for your nationality before you book; our visa and entry guide explains how.
What happens to my luggage during the tour?
Hand luggage stays in the locked vehicle with the driver. If your checked bags are tagged through to your final destination they stay airside. If you are on separate tickets and must collect bags, tell us: we adjust the timing for re-checking them.
What if my inbound flight is delayed?
We watch the flight and shorten the tour, never the buffer. The return time to the terminal is fixed from your departure, so a late landing means fewer stops, not a missed flight.
How much does a layover tour cost?
Each layover tour is quoted for your flight times, party size and what you want to see. Send both flight numbers through the quote form and we reply with a timed plan and one written figure.
Can we go inside the Hassan II Mosque on a layover?
Often, yes. Non-Muslims can visit inside on guided tours at set times outside prayer. Whether a slot fits depends on your landing time and the day (Fridays and holidays have fewer tours), so we check the day's times before you land.
Is the train from Casablanca airport an option?
Yes, a rail link runs from the airport into the city. It works for independent travellers with light bags, but on a tight layover a private car is faster door to door and puts you exactly where you want to be.

Tell us your dates. We'll plan it with you.

  1. Tell us what drew you in. Your dates, who is travelling and what you want to see.
  2. A person reads it. We write a day-by-day plan for your group, private or small-group.
  3. You change anything. Then we confirm the guides, drivers and riads.
