The town of Taza spread across the plain below the hills

Into the Friouato cave and the forests of Tazekka, east of Fes

This long day tour drives east from Fes along the motorway to Taza, then into Tazekka National Park. You see the Ras el-Ma waterfalls, descend the steep staircase into the Gouffre du Friouato with a local guide, and follow oak and cedar roads towards Jbel Tazekka. The day ends with a walk in Taza's old town.

A long day east

Taza guards the corridor between the Rif and the Middle Atlas, the historic route east from Fes towards Algeria. Its old town sits on a ridge above the modern city, around a Great Mosque founded in the Almohad era.

Early morning

Fes to Taza

East along the motorway between the Rif and the Middle Atlas.

Morning

Ras el-Ma

Waterfalls and springs on the edge of the park; strongest after rain.

Late morning

Gouffre du Friouato

Descend the steps into the cave with a local guide; deeper sections are for fit visitors only.

Afternoon

Tazekka forest roads

Through oak and cedar towards the slopes of Jbel Tazekka, with viewpoints on clear days.

Late afternoon

Taza old town, then Fes

A walk on the ridge near the Great Mosque before the drive home.

Road distances and times are typical ranges for a private car, without stops.

How we run it

South of town, Tazekka National Park protects oak and cedar forest climbing towards the summit of Jbel Tazekka. Its best-known sights are the Ras el-Ma waterfalls and the Gouffre du Friouato, a deep cave entered by a long, steep staircase down a natural shaft.

Private

Private means your party only: one vehicle, one driver, your start time, your stops. Linger at the macaques, skip the shop, add a viewpoint. It suits families, couples, photographers and anyone with a fixed plan.

Small-group

Small-group means we pair you with other travellers on the same route and date when there is a match, which shares the day with a few like-minded people. Ask for it in your quote request and we will tell you honestly whether a group fits your dates.

What we arrange

  • Private vehicle and driver from your Fes riad or hotel and back
  • Timing built around your pace, the season and site opening hours
  • A licensed local guide where one adds real value (on request)
  • Lunch stop chosen for the route, from a roadside grill to a riad table
  • Bottled water on board and a phone or WhatsApp contact throughout
  • Fuel, tolls and parking folded into one written quote
  • A local guide for the Friouato cave

Best season

April to June and September to October. Winter brings rain and sometimes snow on the high roads; summer is hot in Taza but cooler in the forest. The cave is cool year-round.

The honest details

The cave is physical

The Friouato descent is a long, steep staircase, slippery in places, and you climb it back out. It is not suitable for everyone; the waterfalls and forest roads still make a full day without it.

Off the beaten path

Facilities in the park are basic. We bring water and plan lunch in Taza or at a simple stop on the way.

Questions, answered

What people ask us most before they book this.

How far is Tazekka National Park from Fes?
Taza is about 120 km east of Fes by motorway, roughly 1h20 to 1h45. The park lies just south of Taza, and its roads are winding, so the round trip makes a long full day.
Can children do the Friouato cave?
Older, sure-footed children often enjoy it with a guide. The staircase is long and steep, so we discuss ages and fitness before including it.
Is this tour private or small-group?
Both are possible. Private is your party alone. Small-group pairs you with other travellers on the same date when there is a match; tell us your preference when you ask for a quote.
How much does this tour cost?
Every tour is a custom quote for your party, dates, pace and choice of private or small-group. Send the details through the quote form and we reply with a written plan and one figure.

Tell us your dates. We'll plan it with you.

  1. Tell us what drew you in. Your dates, who is travelling and what you want to see.
  2. A person reads it. We write a day-by-day plan for your group, private or small-group.
  3. You change anything. Then we confirm the guides, drivers and riads.
