Why Ouarzazate & Aït Ben Haddou
Ouarzazate lies over the Tizi n'Tichka pass on the far southern side of the High Atlas — deep in the pre-Sahara, well away from Fes. Travellers reach it on the southern, Marrakech-side arc of an imperial journey rather than directly from the north, climbing the pass before dropping into the kasbah country and the gateway to the Sahara, Dadès and Drâa. Forty minutes on, Aït Ben Haddou is the most photographed fortified village in the country, a UNESCO site that has stood in for Yunkai and appeared in Gladiator and Lawrence of Arabia, with the working Atlas Studios just beside it.
What to see
A UNESCO-listed village of packed earth and towers; climb to the old granary at the summit for the long view back across the riverbed.
Live sound stages and standing exterior sets left behind by Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven, Cleopatra and a long roll of other productions.
A half-ruined 19th-century Glaoui palace on the old caravan road, with intricate interiors and a fraction of the crowds at Aït Ben Haddou.
Two days further east into cliff-walled valleys, walnut terraces and one of the most dramatic canyon walks anywhere in the south.

Yes — it is the single most striking site in southern Morocco and a UNESCO World Heritage village. Most visitors pass through in an hour; we time the stop for the soft light of sunrise or sunset instead.
Not directly — it sits far to the south, over the Tizi n'Tichka from Marrakech. We fold it into the Marrakech-and-Sahara leg of an imperial journey, staying a night in the kasbah country rather than attempting it as a long out-and-back day.
