Marrakech between flights: the square, the souks and a palace

A Marrakech layover tour works with about 6 hours between landing and an international departure, because Menara airport sits close to the medina. A licensed guide takes you past the Koutoubia to Jemaa el-Fnaa, through the souks and into Bahia Palace or Majorelle Garden. Then your driver takes you back to the terminal with the agreed buffer.

A 7-hour layover, timed backwards

Of Morocco's big airports, Marrakech Menara is the closest to its old city, which makes it the easiest layover in the country. The medina's main sights sit close together around Jemaa el-Fnaa.

How we run it

We keep the walk focused: the Koutoubia, the square, a loop through the souks and one palace or garden. Majorelle Garden is possible but uses timed tickets and sits outside the medina, so it replaces a palace rather than adding to one.

Private

Private is the natural fit for a layover: the whole day is built around your two flight times, and the guide and driver work to your clock alone. If anything runs late, there is nobody else's schedule to balance.

Small-group

Small-group layover tours only work when several travellers share very similar arrival and departure times, which is uncommon. If you are travelling with friends or family on the same flights, we quote one tour for the whole party.

What we arrange

  • Driver waiting in arrivals, working from your real landing time
  • A route planned backwards from your departure time, not forwards from landing
  • Hand luggage kept in the locked vehicle under the driver's watch while you explore
  • A licensed local guide for the city walk (official guides carry a badge)
  • Bottled water, and a phone or WhatsApp contact for the driver throughout
  • Return to the terminal with the buffer agreed before you land
  • Majorelle Garden timed tickets arranged ahead if you choose it

Best season

October to April is the most comfortable. Summer afternoons in Marrakech are very hot, so we keep the walk shaded and short and add indoor stops.

The honest details

Leaving the airport means entering Morocco

To go into town you pass passport control and are formally admitted to Morocco, then go through departure formalities again later. Check whether your nationality needs a visa before you book; see our visa and entry guide.

Luggage

If your checked bags are tagged through to your final destination, you only carry hand luggage, which can stay in the locked vehicle. If you are on separate tickets, you may need to collect bags and check in again: tell us, because it changes the timing. We do not plan around an airport left-luggage desk.

The buffer back to the airport

We plan to have you back at the terminal at least 3 hours before an international departure and 2 hours before a domestic one, unless your airline asks for more. Moroccan airports screen passengers and bags at the terminal entrance as well as after check-in, so queues can build at both points.

Majorelle uses timed entry

Majorelle Garden sells timed tickets and gets busy. On a layover we only include it when a slot fits cleanly between landing and the return buffer.

Questions, answered

What people ask us most before they book this.

How long does my layover need to be for a Marrakech tour?
We suggest at least 6 hours between landing and an international departure; Menara's closeness to the medina makes Marrakech the most forgiving layover in Morocco. Below that, the time left after formalities, the drive and the return buffer is too short to be worth the stress, and we will tell you so rather than sell you a rushed day.
Do I need a visa to leave the airport on a layover?
Leaving the airport means entering Morocco, so the normal entry rules for your passport apply. Many nationalities can enter without a visa for short stays, but not all. Check the official requirements for your nationality before you book; our visa and entry guide explains how.
What happens to my luggage during the tour?
Hand luggage stays in the locked vehicle with the driver. If your checked bags are tagged through to your final destination they stay airside. If you are on separate tickets and must collect bags, tell us: we adjust the timing for re-checking them.
What if my inbound flight is delayed?
We watch the flight and shorten the tour, never the buffer. The return time to the terminal is fixed from your departure, so a late landing means fewer stops, not a missed flight.
How much does a layover tour cost?
Each layover tour is quoted for your flight times, party size and what you want to see. Send both flight numbers through the quote form and we reply with a timed plan and one written figure.
Can we fit Majorelle Garden into a Marrakech layover?
Sometimes. It needs a timed ticket and sits outside the medina, so it usually replaces the Bahia Palace rather than adding to it. We only build it in when a slot fits your times.

Tell us your dates. We'll plan it with you.

  1. Tell us what drew you in. Your dates, who is travelling and what you want to see.
  2. A person reads it. We write a day-by-day plan for your group, private or small-group.
  3. You change anything. Then we confirm the guides, drivers and riads.
