How to get from Fes to Chefchaouen: the blue city by road

There is no train to Chefchaouen — the journey from Fes is always by road, about 200 km north-west through the Rif. Here is every option compared, with honest times and fares, from people who run the route often.

To get from Fes to Chefchaouen you have four practical options, because there is no train: a CTM or Supratours coach (about 4 to 4.5 hours, roughly 80–110 MAD), a shared grand taxi via Ouezzane with a change (about 3.5 to 4 hours plus waiting), a private car or chauffeur transfer (about 3.5 hours door to door, and the most flexible), or an organised day trip or overnight tour. The road runs about 200 km north-west from Fes, climbing through the Rif's olive terraces and cork-oak forest via the holy town of Ouezzane.

Why there is no train to Chefchaouen

It is the first thing to clear up, because so many people search for it: Chefchaouen has no railway station. The town sits high in the Rif mountains, well off Morocco's north–south rail corridor, and no line has ever reached it. The nearest ONCF stations are Fes and Tangier, and from either you finish the journey by road. So however you picture the trip, the leg from Fes to the blue city is always by coach, grand taxi or car — there is no train shortcut to be found.

By coach — CTM and Supratours

The intercity coach is the backbone of independent travel between Fes and Chefchaouen. Both CTM and Supratours run the route from the Fes bus station, taking about 4 to 4.5 hours — a little slower than a private car because the coaches keep to the limits and make a stop or two. Tickets are typically in the region of 80–110 MAD (indicative; check the current operator), with CTM adding a small charge for hold luggage. The coaches are comfortable, air-conditioned and reliable, and they drop you at the Chefchaouen bus station on the edge of town, a short petit taxi ride below the medina.

Book ahead where you can. The morning departures are the most useful and the most popular, so they sell out in high season — reserve a seat online or at the station the day before. CTM in particular lets you choose your seat in advance, which is worth doing for the front rows on the winding Rif sections.

By shared grand taxi via Ouezzane

Morocco's shared grand taxis — the cream or beige old Mercedes that carry six passengers — are the cheapest way north, but rarely direct. The usual pattern is to take a grand taxi from Fes to Ouezzane, the holy town roughly halfway, then change to a second grand taxi from Ouezzane up to Chefchaouen. Each leg leaves only when all six seats are full, so there is some waiting built in, and you pay per seat. It is an authentic, sociable and inexpensive way to travel if you are comfortable with the change and the unpredictability — but for a fixed departure time, your own space and no waiting, the coach or a private car is the calmer choice.

By private car or chauffeur transfer

A private transfer is how most of our travellers make the journey, and for good reason: it is door to door in about 3.5 hours, on your own schedule, with luggage handled and air conditioning all the way. Just as importantly, the road itself is part of the pleasure — you can pause at the viewpoints around Ouezzane, see the olive presses and cork-oak forest properly, and break for lunch rather than rushing past. A driver also means you arrive at your riad in the blue medina rather than at the bus station below it. We build the Fes–Chefchaouen leg into northern Morocco itineraries and can arrange a one-way transfer on its own — just tell us your dates.

Day trip or overnight?

You can visit Chefchaouen as a day trip from Fes, but be honest with yourself about the maths: 3.5 hours each way is seven hours on the road for only a few midday hours in town — and midday is exactly when the blue lanes are busiest with other day-trippers and tour groups. A private transfer makes a day trip just about workable; the coach timings make it tight. An overnight stay changes the experience completely. The blue streets at dusk and at dawn, emptied of the crowds, are a different and far more photogenic town, and you wake up already there. For a relaxed visit out of Fes we suggest one or two nights — see our full Chefchaouen guide for what to do once you arrive.

The route itself

From Fes the road heads north-west, leaving the imperial plain and climbing steadily into the Rif. The halfway marker is Ouezzane, a whitewashed holy town spread over the hills, a natural place to stretch your legs or grab a coffee. Beyond it the landscape turns to olive terraces and cork-oak forest, the air cools, and the final approach reveals Chefchaouen tucked beneath the twin peaks that give it its name. It is a beautiful drive in its own right — one reason the private-car option appeals to travellers who would rather not sleep through it on a coach. If you are planning a wider loop, Chefchaouen pairs naturally onward to Tangier (about two hours) for a northern circuit.

Frequently asked

How do you get from Fes to Chefchaouen?

There is no train to Chefchaouen, so the four practical options from Fes are a CTM or Supratours coach (about 4 to 4.5 hours, roughly 80–110 MAD), a shared grand taxi via Ouezzane with a change (about 3.5 to 4 hours), a private car or chauffeur transfer (about 3.5 hours door to door, the most flexible), or an organised day trip or overnight tour. The road runs about 200 km north-west via the holy town of Ouezzane through the Rif's olive terraces.

Is there a train from Fes to Chefchaouen?

No. Chefchaouen has no railway station and never has — it sits high in the Rif mountains, away from Morocco's rail corridor. The nearest stations are Fes itself and Tangier, and from either you continue by bus, grand taxi or private car. Anyone telling you to 'take the train to Chefchaouen' is mistaken; the journey from Fes is always by road.

How long is the drive from Fes to Chefchaouen?

The drive is about 200 km and takes roughly 3.5 hours in a private car with no stops, going north-west via Ouezzane. A CTM or Supratours coach takes about 4 to 4.5 hours because it keeps to the speed limits and makes a stop or two. Allow longer if you want to pause at the Ouezzane viewpoints or break the journey for lunch.

How much does a bus from Fes to Chefchaouen cost?

A CTM or Supratours coach ticket from Fes to Chefchaouen is typically in the region of 80 to 110 MAD (roughly 8 to 11 euros), with a small extra charge for hold luggage on CTM. Fares are indicative and change with season and demand — check the current operator website or the Fes bus station for the day's price and to reserve a seat in advance, as the popular morning departures fill up.

Can you do Chefchaouen as a day trip from Fes?

Yes, but it is a long day: roughly 3.5 hours each way means seven hours on the road and only a few midday hours in town, when the blue lanes are at their busiest with other day-trippers. A private transfer makes a day trip feasible; the coach timings make it tight. For the blue streets at dusk and dawn, free of the tour groups, an overnight stay is far more rewarding — most travellers we host fold in one or two nights.

Is a grand taxi from Fes to Chefchaouen a good idea?

Shared grand taxis are cheap and authentic but rarely direct — you usually travel Fes to Ouezzane, then change to a second grand taxi from Ouezzane to Chefchaouen, waiting for each old Mercedes to fill its six seats before it leaves. It works for budget travellers comfortable with a change and a wait, but for comfort, a fixed time and door-to-door service, a private transfer or the coach is simpler.

What is the best way to travel from Fes to Chefchaouen?

For most visitors a private chauffeur transfer is the best balance: door to door in about 3.5 hours, your own departure time, air conditioning, and the freedom to stop at the Ouezzane viewpoints or for lunch along the way. The CTM or Supratours coach is the best value if you are travelling light and on a budget. Grand taxis are cheapest but least comfortable; organised tours suit those who want a guide and the return leg handled.
