Ouezzane: a holy town on the edge of the Rif
Ouezzane is a hill town about 2 h 30 north-west of Fes, holy to two faiths. Moulay Abdallah Chérif founded its zawiya in 1649, and Jewish pilgrims come to the nearby tomb of Rabbi Amram ben Diwan. You walk the old quarters of a town that never needed ramparts, look at the djellaba shops, and drive home.

A long day to the edge of the Rif
Ouezzane sits on the southern edge of the Jebala country, built like an amphitheatre on the slopes of Jbel Bouhlal at about 614 m. Moulay Abdallah Chérif, a Sufi master descended from Idris II, founded its zawiya in 1649, and in the 18th and 19th centuries it became an important religious and political centre. The town was called Dar Dmana, the House of Safety.

How we run it
It is holy to Moroccan Jews too: Rabbi Amram ben Diwan, an 18th-century rabbi, lived here and is buried at Azjen a few kilometres away, and pilgrims still visit his tomb. Unusually for an old Moroccan town, Ouezzane has no ramparts, probably because the standing of its brotherhood kept it safe.
The commercial streets are known for the djellaba ouazzania, the woollen robe sold in rows of small shops.
Private
Private means your party only: one vehicle, one driver, your start time, your stops. Linger at the macaques, skip the shop, add a viewpoint. It suits families, couples, photographers and anyone with a fixed plan.
Small-group
Small-group means we pair you with other travellers on the same route and date when there is a match, which shares the day with a few like-minded people. Ask for it in your quote request and we will tell you honestly whether a group fits your dates.
What we arrange
- Private vehicle and driver from your Fes riad or hotel and back
- Timing built around your pace, the season and site opening hours
- A licensed local guide where one adds real value (on request)
- Lunch stop chosen for the route, from a roadside grill to a riad table
- Bottled water on board and a phone or WhatsApp contact throughout
- Fuel, tolls and parking folded into one written quote
- A local guide in Ouezzane's old quarters
Best season
March to June and September to November. Summer is hot on the road; winter days are short for a long drive.
