Moulay Idriss Zerhoun and Volubilis: a holy town, a Roman city, one slow day
This full-day tour from Fes stays on Jebel Zerhoun instead of rushing on to Meknes. You walk the Khiber and Tasga quarters of Moulay Idriss to the terraces above the shrine, eat lunch in town, then visit Volubilis in the afternoon light. Return to your Fes riad that evening, or sleep in a Moulay Idriss guesthouse.

A full day on the mountain
Our Volubilis and Meknes day trip covers the classic pairing. This tour is for travellers who want the other half of the story: Moulay Idriss Zerhoun, the town where Idris I, founder of Morocco's first Islamic dynasty, is buried, and the Roman city whose ruins spread across the plain beneath it.

How we run it
Instead of rushing on to Meknes, the day stays on Jebel Zerhoun: a walk up through the Khiber and Tasga quarters to the terraces above the shrine, the unusual cylindrical minaret faced with green tiles and Quranic script, and a long, unhurried visit to Volubilis when the light is low.
Private
Private means your party only: one vehicle, one driver, your start time, your stops. Linger at the macaques, skip the shop, add a viewpoint. It suits families, couples, photographers and anyone with a fixed plan.
Small-group
Small-group means we pair you with other travellers on the same route and date when there is a match, which shares the day with a few like-minded people. Ask for it in your quote request and we will tell you honestly whether a group fits your dates.
What we arrange
- Private vehicle and driver from your Fes riad or hotel and back
- Timing built around your pace, the season and site opening hours
- A licensed local guide where one adds real value (on request)
- Lunch stop chosen for the route, from a roadside grill to a riad table
- Bottled water on board and a phone or WhatsApp contact throughout
- Fuel, tolls and parking folded into one written quote
- Optional licensed site guide at Volubilis
Best season
March to May, when the hills are green and wildflowers grow among the ruins, and October to November. Volubilis has almost no shade, so in summer we visit early or late.

Moulay Idriss ZerhounThe honest details
The shrine is for Muslims
The mausoleum of Moulay Idriss I is open to Muslims only. Visitors of every faith are welcome in the town and on its terraces; dress modestly.
Steep lanes
Moulay Idriss is built on two steep hills. The walk is short but uphill; tell us about mobility needs and we plan around them.
