Three days is the realistic minimum to reach Erg Chebbi from Fes, sleep a night on the dunes and get back, because the drive each way is long. Two days only works if you finish in a different city. Our standard trip is three days and two nights — one near Merzouga and one in the desert camp itself — which gives you a proper sunset, a night under the stars and a sunrise rather than a rushed in-and-out.
This three-day tour is a loop: it returns to Fes on the final evening, so it suits travellers who are based in Fes or flying out of it. If you'd rather end in Marrakech, that's a different itinerary — many travellers continue south and west from the desert instead of driving back north. They're long — this is a big country and the dunes are genuinely far from Fes. Expect the better part of a day on the road on day one and again on day three, broken up with stops in Ifrane, the cedar forest, Midelt and the Ziz gorges. Day two is the relaxed one, spent around Merzouga and the dunes. If long drives aren't for you, a shorter day trip from Fes may suit better.
