Your 3-day plan

  1. 1

    Day 1

    Fes el-Bali medina

A full guided day in the 9th-century walled medina — the world's largest car-free old city. Enter at the blue Bab Bou Jeloud gate and work through the Bou Inania and Al-Attarine medersas, the Kairaouine mosque and university (among the oldest still operating in the world), the Nejjarine fountain and woodwork museum, and the famous Chouara tanneries seen from a leather-shop terrace above the dye pits. Spend the afternoon getting pleasantly lost in the souks of Talaa Kebira and Talaa Seghira.

    Day 2

Meknes, Volubilis & Moulay Idriss day trip

A day trip west into the imperial heartland. Meknes is about an hour from Fes: see the monumental Bab Mansour gate on the Place el-Hedim, the vast Heri es-Souani granaries and stables of Moulay Ismail, the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail and the walled medina. From Meknes it is roughly half an hour on to Volubilis, Morocco's best-preserved Roman city, with its mosaics still in place, a basilica, a capitol and a triumphal arch set in rolling farmland. The sacred hilltop town of Moulay Idriss Zerhoun, holiest in Morocco, sits about ten minutes from Volubilis — a viewpoint, lunch and a wander before the drive back to Fes for the night.

    • Heri es-Souani granaries
    • Moulay Ismail Mausoleum

    Day 3

    Fes viewpoints, gardens & crafts

A slower second Fes day. Begin above the city at the Merinid Tombs and the Borj Nord fortress for a panorama over the whole medina, then cross to the Andalusian quarter (Fes el-Andalous) and its mosque across the Oued Fes. Stroll the restored Jnan Sbil gardens beside the royal palace, then visit a pottery and zellige cooperative in the Aïn Nokbi quarter to watch craftsmen shape and glaze the city's signature blue ceramics before a final walk through the souks.

Good to know

Practical notes

  • Meknes, Volubilis and Moulay Idriss all lie west of Fes within about an hour, so the three combine comfortably into one full touring day — Fes to Meknes is roughly an hour, Meknes to Volubilis about half an hour, and Volubilis to Moulay Idriss only ten minutes.
  • Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) are the best seasons; summer is hot and the open Roman site at Volubilis has little shade, so bring a hat and water.
  • A licensed local guide is strongly recommended for the Fes medina days — Fes el-Bali is a genuine labyrinth of car-free lanes, and wear closed, sturdy shoes for the steep cobbles.
  • A guide-driver lets you link Meknes, Volubilis and Moulay Idriss on day two without worrying about parking or the medina's gates.

Frequently asked

Can you visit Meknes, Volubilis and Moulay Idriss from Fes in one day?

Yes — all three lie west of Fes within about an hour. Fes to Meknes is roughly an hour, Meknes to Volubilis about half an hour, and Volubilis to Moulay Idriss only ten minutes, so the imperial city, the Roman ruins and the holy town combine well into a single full day trip with a driver.

What is the imperial heartland of Morocco?

It is the cluster of historic sites around Fes and Meknes in the north: the great medina of Fes el-Bali, the monumental gates and granaries of imperial Meknes, the Roman city of Volubilis and the sacred town of Moulay Idriss Zerhoun — several of them UNESCO World Heritage sites within an easy drive of each other.

Is 3 days enough for Fes, Meknes and Volubilis?

Three days is a comfortable length: a full day in the Fes medina, a day trip pairing Meknes, Volubilis and Moulay Idriss, and a slower second Fes day for the Merinid Tombs viewpoint, the Andalusian quarter, the Jnan Sbil gardens and the craft cooperatives.
